About Midsomer Norton

Midsomer Norton is a market town in the Somerset coalfield area of Bath and North East Somerset. The town's name combines 'Midsomer' (meaning 'mid-summer', possibly referring to its pleasant position) with Norton ('north farm'). The town prospered from coal mining from the medieval period through to the 20th century, and the last Somerset coalfield pit closed nearby in 1973. The handsome High Street features a medieval market cross and the Hollies, a fine 17th-century town house. Midsomer Norton and its twin town Radstock inspired the name of the fictional 'Midsomer' in the popular ITV detective series Midsomer Murders, though the show is filmed in the Chilterns and Buckinghamshire.
